FDA clears glove made from guayule

Bookmark and Share

The FDA has approved a guayule-based latex glove.

The first medical device made from guayule natural rubber has just been cleared to market by the FDA. This is very exciting news for individuals with latex allergies and medical institutions becoming latex-safe! Soon we’ll be seeing guayule catheters, guayule dental dams, guayule everything. Here’s one article I found about the 510(k) clearance from the United Press International.

    Betsy,

This is such important news! I have an abundance of thoughts to share with you! We have been waiting to hear about this for years in the community of people living with Hevea latex allergy.
At last, the long nightmare of avoidance of medical devices and postponement of medical procedures is coming to an end. For years, the medical profession has been an area to avoid and strictly scrutinize prior to treatment, all because of the prevalence of Hevea latex. This has been ironic on many levels-
    1. Many of us work/formerly worked in healthcare. We have lost jobs or had to accept lesser paying or alternative jobs because of our allergy.
    2. All of us have medical conditions that need care, just like eveyone else.
    3. Many of us are suffering from auto-immune disorders, post development of latex allergy, that warrent further investigation and treatment.

The development of the Yulex glove provides a safe alternative to the Hevea glove, one with all the sensitivity and flexability that synthetic gloves may lack. Surgeons soon will no longer have excuses for maintaining their usage of Hevea latex gloves.
As a green product, it is biodegradeable, unlike synthetics! This argument may no longer be used exclusively by the Hevea Rubber industry, now that guayule exists.
Marketing should bear that in mind when distribution time becomes optimal.
    Best Wishes and more later…
